Internship has opened my eyes to the area of education. I had previously been somewhat interested in this are but internship helped me really think about it. Then, I got to see some of how professional development works and even that grabbed me, all of the work I had in internship I thoroughly enjoyed. Now, I do not think that internship has changed my immediate path, I still would like to go into Aerospace Engineering then maybe education comes later in life.

So my project ended up just generally helping with the professional learning team at HTH GSE. I am working on the ambassador side of things and it has been going well. Part 1: Respond to 2 or 3 questions from the following list:
How was your work as an intern meaningful to your education? My work was meaningful because I think it gave me a large bunch of new ideas as far as my future. What did you learn about your own work from your internship project? I really learned how interesting and fun it is to work with adults in the way I was. All of the work I was doing felt meaningful. Part 2: Respond to 2 or 3 questions from the following list: What new appreciations did you develop while working as an intern? Why? I have a insanely large appreciation for PBL now, the work that teachers have to put in is incredibly time consuming. Projects take way longer to create than I would have ever thought. What qualities or characteristics did you see in the people around you that you want to develop in yourself? Why? All of the people have unique and great personalities, specifically when it comes to presenting. My mentors are all amazing presenters and collaborators, I was able to see this while observing conversations in the camp.
a. Their first and last name
Nia Asbill b. A description of where their internship is (name of business/organization, location) Scripps Institute of Oceanography, in the Marine Ecosystem Sensing, Observation and Modeling building c. An explanation of the type of work that is done at business/organization Nia is listening to sound files and looking at their visual representation to mark where whale sounds are observed. This is cross-referenced with another audio file to pinpoint where a given sound is coming from and it’s intensity. d. An overview of the project they are undertaking at that work site (the objective and how they will be meeting that objective) Nia is assisting a graduate student with his thesis work. The project studies gray whales and the sounds they make, as well as the behavior associated with them. e. A description of at least two things that struck you about their internship. Be sure to explain why. One thing that stood out to me was how bad everyone is at driving in La Jolla. According to Nia, she gets, “cut off every fucking day.” That’s insane. Another thing that stood out to me was how laid back she said her workplace was. You would not expect a lab to be that laid back, it seems like it would be more high stress.
Interview ResponsesWhat is your job title? Professional Learning Coordinator (for Chula Vista campus) What are your main duties and responsibilities? My main duties and responsibilities are to coordinate and facilitate significant learning experiences for educators and professionals visiting HTH. This includes phone and email conversations with potential visitors to understand the context they are visiting from. Why did you choose to work here? The creativity, freedom, and joy that colleagues bring to the space is immediately palpable. Teachers and students are trusted and emboldened to explore and create at will. There is something exciting and energizing about this environment. And there is an emphasis on doing what is right and important for students. How did you end up doing the job that you do? Black Eyed Peas got me into teaching. Meeting my now husband got me out to San Diego. His neighbor was (is) a director of a HTH school. Following random moments of inspiration seemed to work out beautifully for me. And would be my one piece of advice. When an opportunity arises or a spark of inspiration that seems intriguing but odd, just go for it. Never know where or to whom it might lead. What do you enjoy most about your job? Elevating student voices and leadership opportunities in the school and classroom. supporting teachers in how to trust students and empower students to take the lead. Do you consider a career in this area satisfying? In what ways? Yes. There are challenging days but I go home each day feeling like I have connected and/or supported someone in some way. What is a typical work day like? Time is spent between emails, phone calls, and on the best days, having discussions with educators and students about how to make education more relevant and transformative. and joyful. :) What does it take to be successful in this organization (High Tech High)? creativity, flexibility, and human connection Journal Response
What strikes you most about your workplace? - What struck me most initially was how few people run all of the events at HTH. All of the PBL camps that our school run are organized by a handful of people, it does not seem that way if you are at any of these events.
What strikes you most about your colleagues? - The way that my colleagues run their meetings falls on a similar path to how we are often structured to have team meetings in projects. In a project, often as students we are given select roles to help facilitate projects, and they are doing the same thing (but a lot better!) in their meetings. What are you looking forward to during your internship? - I am looking forward to being apart of the events that HTH has and takes place in. They are all incredibly interesting to me because all of the stuff that the teachers are learning seems so basic to me because I have done it for so long. There are so many similarities that as a student we just brush off or ignore. I am also looking forward to my potential project of overall improving the ambassador system with a better website and more interaction with students in workshops at PBL camps we host. Where am I going? - I am planning on working on an improvement project for our schools environment.
Who is my mentor? - Mrs. Shani has said she is willing to oversee my project. We are going to speak more about my project in specifics this Tuesday the 10th. My project - I am going to go more into detail about what I will be doing on Tuesday, but for now I feel that I would like to focus on improving our schools environment. Currently it is vague who or where I may be working. What are you excited for? - I am excited for working within our school in a different format. I am used to being simply a student, but hope to understand how our school runs in a new light. |
